Beyond the Scope: A newsletter about innovation in animal health
As a lifelong learner and veterinary pathologist, I’ve always been drawn to exploring the intersection of the traditional and the cutting edge technologies in veterinary medicine. This newsletter is a celebration of that fusion-a platform to discuss, dissect, and disseminate the incredible advances that are shaping our profession.
We are living in extraordinary times. The pace of innovation in animal health is accelerating, influenced by decades of incremental advancements and now, by the impact of generative AI and digital connectivity, Moore’s Law is manifesting in our field in fascinating ways. Keeping up with the change is dizzying, and although we’re all trying to keep up, it’s often like drinking from a firehose.
My career has taken me from the microscope to the managerial suite, allowing me to participate in groundbreaking projects like the digital conversion of a large commercial pathology workflow at Antech Diagnostics, deploying deep learning image analysis systems with Mars’ Next Generation Team, and more recently, bringing the genomics-based precision medicine revolution to veterinary oncology as part of the leadership team at Vidium Animal Health. These experiences have not only enriched my professional life, but have also thrust me into new areas of veterinary medicine and in contact with the fascinating people and technology making meaningful change a reality. Despite their exciting potential, many of these innovations risk fading into obscurity or failing altogether- a common fate for startup companies struggling to secure funding, raise awareness, and gain recognition within the broader veterinary community.
This newsletter aims to bridge gaps and break down the silos that often isolate us within our specialties. Whether you are a practitioner, business leader, or simply an enthusiast of veterinary science, I invite you to join me in exploring the convergence of innovation and animal health. Through this platform I hope to bring you along on the journey as I keep my finger on the pulse of interesting things happening in veterinary medicine.
